About Elk

Tucked away in the misty coastal hills of Mendocino County, in Northern California, the Lotus Dharma Garden retreat center in Elk is a sanctuary of profound practice and quiet beauty. Once an organic old apple farm, with Rinpoche’s enlightened vision and blessing, the land now blooms with sacred purpose and has transformed over the years into a place where the profound teachings of the Vajrayana are preserved and practiced with devotion.

Each day, residents engage in dedicated group and individual practice with a particular emphasis on the Dudjom Tersar Tröma cycle. Between practice sessions and teachings in the meditation hall, visitors are invited to meander the trails through the orchards, forests and meadows, rest by the peaceful pond, or enjoy the bountiful and vibrant community garden. At the heart of the center lies a traditional Newari stupa, radiating peace and awakening devotion in all who approach. It stands on the land as an offering as well as a reminder of Rinpoche’s sublime intention. Under Loppön Rinpoche’s guidance, this land serves not only as a place of retreat, but also as a ground for transformation and deepening devotion. It is a space where practitioners of all levels of experience are offered the rare and precious opportunity to connect to the Dharma with the support of an authentic master, the warmth of a dedicated sangha, and a quiet natural environment conducive to practice.
